Review Diani Regatta 2020

As in previous years, the Diani Regatta was an absolute highlight in Diani Beach. The event was better attended than ever before and also much better organized than in previous years. And: We were there as a sponsor for the first time!

At about 20 market stalls you could buy all kinds of things – local handicraft like mats, baskets and cloths, but also local musical instruments like rattles and drums. The workshops for the disabled from Bombolulu were on board with their wide range of products, Simply Soso Design from Kilifi offered beautiful furniture and bags made of recycled materials, and jewellery dealers like Kazuri Beads were also present.

The women from Gazi again provided for the physical well-being with their traditional Swahili Food Buffet and for those who preferred international cuisine, there was also enough food provided. The offer was completed by cold drinks and a traditional coffee dealer.

There were also 3 cultural groups from the surrounding Kayas (the holy forests). They performed songs, dances and holy ceremonies, which are really traditional, unlike the usual tourist junk.

This year there were 20 Ngalawa boats at the start – so in 2 heats with 10 boats each they fought for the first time to reach the final. Our regular guest Jana was courageous and sailed as an active passenger with our team. We were challenged in the second pre-run and were able to finish the race successfully with the third place. Hurray – the final was secured!

The ten boats put up a tough fight in the final. Unfortunately, our boat lost important meters at the start and then let a large part of the field pass the first buoy. So we crossed the finish line as eighth. No place on the podium, but the eighth place with 20 participants and especially the entry into the final made us happy.

The best pictures can be found as always on www.dianiregatta.co.ke – but we also have a small selection of impressions for you!
